GLOBAL POSTCARDS SERIES: Morocco, Haven for Women Artists Then and Now
The Journey to the Sources of Art exhibition by Chaibia Talal and other female artists at the Mohammed VI Museum in Morocco houses many pieces by Moroccan women artists in the permanent collection. The collection chronicles the artistic journeys of three key Moroccan female artists whose common element is identity through a rural and oral tradition. Moreover, we see common themes and popular expressions that include henna, tattoo, weaving and embroidery come back full circle in Moroccan as well as global society.
"Another common trait among the three women is their activism for women empowerment through art. Although they were introduced to colors through contact with academic painters...their self- education allowed them, with intelligence and finesse, to give birth to a non-academic art".
This is an example of the vitality that everyday life brings to art through observation, innovation and spontaneity. Whether in Morocco or at home, these artists motivate us to draw inspiration from daily life as an expression of identity, community and communal experiences.
